Chana Gashi/ Chana curry without garam Masala/ Chickpea curry

The delicious version of Chickpea curry without using lentils (dal) or garam masala. Chickpea is called Chana in Hindi, Chano in Konkani. Chickpea is very healthy. It is known for its own nutritional benefits. This curry is Konkani recipe/ Amchigele style/ Coastal curry recipe. The ingredients or items required and the preparation time is also less. The use of coconut in the curry enriches the nutritional benefits and also the taste. The speciality of this recipe is it is an Indian vegetable sambar/ sambhar recipe prepared without dal/ lentils. South Indian recipe best suited for roti/ chapathi/ rice.

This curry is authentic Konkani curry served in temples and special occasions, Indian festivals. The blend of coconut, tamarind, coriander seeds and red chillies always provides aroma. Tricks for good taste:

  1. Use fresh coconut for more flavour. However, the dry desiccated coconut gives the same if soaked for 10 minutes.
  2. Chop Okra/ bhindi/ byand according to the required size.
  3. Do not overcook the vegetable
  4. Add Kashmiri chilli for good colour in curry (optional)

Ingredients Required

1. Chana/Kabulkadle/ Chickpea –2 cups

2. Yam/ Suvarna gedde –1 cup (chopped) can be replaced by potato

For Masala

1. Desiccated coconut –1/2 cup

2. Coriander seeds –2 tbsp

3. Red chillies –4-6

4. Tamarind –a small lemon sized

5. Salt — to taste

6. Water –as required

Seasoning: 1. Mustard seed –1 tbsp, 2. Oil –2 tbsp, 3. Red chilly — 1, 4. Curry leaves–few

Method:

Step 1: Roast 2 table spoon coriander Seeds with 6 Red Chillies (as per spice level).

Step 2: Grind Coconut (half cup), Roasted Chillies, Roasted Coriander Seeds, 1 cup water, Lemon sized tamarind to thin paste.

Step 3: Cook Chickpeas or chana. Chickpeas can be cooked without soaking, boil it 10 minutes, cool and cook for 6-7 whistles. Do not over cook chickpeas.

(Tips for cooking chana or chickpeas)

Step 4: Add Yam or suvarna gedde (if available) or replace it with Potatoes (4). You can cook fresh yam separately and add (frozen yam taken here)

Step 5: Add the ground masala and 2tbsp Salt(as per taste).

Step 5: Tempering or seasoning: 1 tbsp Oil, Mustard seeds, Few curry leaves, 1 red chilly.

Step 7: Add the seasoning to the curry.
